At the hotel, Rodney found a brochure for a samurai experience, with a choice of a half-day or a full-day lesson. We both thought it sounded great for him, he called and made the reservation for a lesson the next morning. We met the sensei at the train station along with two other students, one from Poland and one from California, and took the train to the dojo.
The first lesson of the day was the history of the samurai in its birthplace, Kyoto.
Next, was to choose a samurai kimono.
Having left shoes at the door, American socks were then replaced with tabi socks and the samurais were instructed how to tie their katana (sword) belts.
(Good thing the tabis had velcro at the heel, because Rodney's size 13s barely fit!!)
Ready for instruction!
Time to dress the part...
A properly dressed samurai...
(Except for the rolled-up pants underneath!)
A few photo ops
Then, dress rehearsal.....
